Body wave human hair bundle by Suvita Hair

Quick answer: With proper care, the human hair we sell lasts 3–5 years: raw, virgin and Remy alike, in every shade and texture. That is the life of the hair. The attachment is a separate clock: tape-ins are re-applied every 6–8 weeks and keratin tips and nano rings are re-installed every few months, re-using the same hair.

Two numbers get mixed up when people ask how long hair extensions last. One is how long the hair itself stays wearable. The other is how long one installation stays in before it has to be moved up, re-taped or re-done. This guide separates the two, then lists what actually wears hair out.

How long the hair lasts

Every quality on the shop lasts 3–5 years with proper care. That includes raw bundles (one donor, unprocessed), virgin bundles (2–3 donors, never chemically processed) and the Remy hair everything else is made from (3–5 donors, cuticles aligned root to tip). The qualities differ in donors, processing, and the textures and shades they come in, not in how long they last.

The same is true of the shades. #613 and #27 are lifted in our facility and need more conditioning than the natural shades, but with that care they reach the same 3–5 years.

How long an install lasts

Attachments wear out and hair grows, so each method has its own interval. The hair comes out and goes back in.

  • Tape-ins: re-applied with fresh tape every 6–8 weeks.
  • Keratin tips and nano rings: 3–4 months per install, then moved up or re-bonded.
  • Clip-ins and ponytails: worn by day and taken out at night, so there is no install to wear out; the clips and combs are the parts to check.
  • Sew-ins: the bundles are taken down and re-sewn as your own hair grows. Your stylist decides when.

Closures, frontals and lace wigs

On a frontal, closure or lace wig, the lace usually wears before the hair does, because it is laid and removed many times. Removing it with adhesive remover rather than pulling, and keeping conditioner off the knots, are the two habits that keep a lace piece wearable longest. Our guide to caring for HD lace covers both.

What shortens the life of human hair

  • Heat. Irons above 180 °C, or any heat without a protectant, dry the hair and relax steam-set waves and curls.
  • Friction. Sleeping on loose hair, cotton pillowcases and rubbing the hair dry with a towel all rough up the cuticle.
  • Skipping detangling. Small knots near the weft or bond become mats.
  • Sulphate shampoos and no conditioner. Extensions get no oil from your scalp; they rely on what you put on them.
  • Chlorine and salt water. Wet the hair with clean water and add conditioner before swimming, and rinse straight afterwards.
  • More chemical work. Toning and deposit colour are fine; lifting hair that has already been lifted is not.

A routine that gets you to 3–5 years

  1. Detangle every day, from the ends upwards, with a wide-tooth comb or loop brush.
  2. Wash when product builds up, with a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner on the lengths; our guide to washing human hair bundles goes step by step.
  3. Add a deep-conditioning mask every week or two, weekly for blondes and curls.
  4. Use a heat protectant and keep tools under 180 °C.
  5. Sleep with the hair tied or plaited, on satin or silk.
  6. Trim the ends when they start to feel dry.

Hair that is cared for this way can be re-installed again and again. For more on daily care by extension type, read how to care for human hair extensions.

Frequently asked questions

Do raw, virgin and Remy hair have different lifespans?
No. Every quality we sell, raw, virgin and Remy, lasts 3–5 years with proper care. They differ in donors, processing and the textures and shades available.
How long do tape-in extensions last?
The hair lasts 3–5 years with proper care. Each application lasts 6–8 weeks, after which the same pieces are re-taped and re-applied.
Do blonde extensions wear out faster?
Not with proper care. #27 and #613 are lifted, so they need more conditioning than natural shades, but they last 3–5 years like every other shade.
Can I reuse bundles for a second sew-in?
Yes. Take them down carefully, wash and condition them, let them dry, and they can be sewn in again.
