How to tell real Remy human hair from non-Remy

Cuticle direction, tangle and shed behaviour, and what a burn test can and cannot prove: checks that need nothing but your hands and a few days of wear.

“Remy” is printed on almost every packet of human hair sold today, which makes the word close to useless on its own. The good news is that the property it describes is physical, and you can check for it without a microscope or a laboratory. This guide explains what Remy actually means, why it matters for how hair behaves, and the checks you can do at home in the first few days after a parcel arrives.

What Remy actually means

Each human hair is covered in a cuticle: overlapping scales, a little like roof tiles, that all point from the root towards the tip. On a person's head every strand points the same way, so the scales lie in one direction across the whole head of hair. Hair is described as Remy when it has been collected and kept so that this alignment survives: every strand in the bundle still runs root to tip in the same direction, with the cuticle intact.

Non-Remy hair is gathered without keeping that order, for example from hair that has fallen out and been swept up or combed out of brushes. Some strands end up upside down. When scales face both ways they catch on each other, and the hair tangles and mats however much it is conditioned. To hide this, non-Remy hair is often stripped of its cuticle in an acid bath and coated in silicone. It feels wonderfully silky on the day it arrives, and then the coating washes off.

Remy says nothing about colour, texture or the country the hair came from. It is purely about direction and cuticle. That is why the checks below focus on how the hair behaves rather than how it looks in a photo.

Remy, virgin and raw: how they differ

These three words are often used as if they meant the same thing. They do not, and the difference explains a lot of the price range you see.

  • Remy means cuticle-aligned. Our Remy hair is collected from 3–5 donors per bundle and is available in every shade, because it can be coloured and lifted.
  • Virgin hair has never been chemically processed. Ours comes from 2–3 donors per bundle, in shades #1B, #2 and #4. See straight virgin bundles.
  • Raw hair is from a single donor and is left unprocessed, in its natural texture (straight, natural wavy or natural curly) and natural shade, #1B or #2. See straight raw bundles.

Virgin and raw hair are both Remy in the sense that the cuticle runs one way. The checks below work for all three.

Check 1: run your fingers along a single strand

This is the quickest test and the one most people already know. Take one strand from the middle of the bundle, not from the edge where loose hairs collect.

  1. Hold the strand near the weft (the root end) between finger and thumb of one hand.
  2. With the other hand, pinch the strand lightly and slide your fingers from the root end towards the tip. It should feel smooth.
  3. Now slide back from the tip towards the root. You should feel a faint drag or slight roughness: that is the cuticle scales catching against your skin.

If both directions feel exactly the same and very slippery, the cuticle has probably been stripped and the hair coated. If a few strands feel rough going root to tip, they are likely reversed. Repeat on five or six strands from different parts of the bundle; one odd strand means little, a pattern means a lot.

Check 2: watch how it tangles

Reversed strands show themselves when the hair moves against itself. Two simple ways to see this:

  • The rub test. Hold the weft in one hand and gently rub a section of hair between your palms, upwards and downwards, for ten seconds. Remy hair separates again when you shake it out. Hair with mixed cuticles knots near the ends and forms small balls of fluff.
  • The wash test. Wash the bundle once, as described in our care guide, and let it air-dry without brushing. Remy hair dries with its pattern intact and combs through from the ends up. Non-Remy hair, once its silicone has rinsed away, often dries matted at the nape end and feels dry and straw-like.

Tangling after several weeks of wear can happen with any hair if it is slept on wet or never conditioned, so judge the hair on its first wash, not its tenth.

Check 3: shedding at the weft

All wefted hair loses a few strands, especially in the first wash, because the ends of the stitching hold short hairs loosely. What you are looking for is steady, continuing loss.

  • Hold the weft and run a wide-tooth comb gently through the length three or four times. A handful of short strands is normal.
  • If strands keep coming out at the seam with every pass, the weft is poorly sewn. This is a construction fault, separate from Remy, but the two often go together in cheap hair.
  • Look along the weft itself. A tight, even double seam with no visible gaps is a good sign.

Check 4: the burn test, and its limits

The burn test is widely recommended and widely misunderstood. It can tell you whether a sample is human hair or synthetic fibre. It cannot tell you whether human hair is Remy.

Reading a burn test
What you seeWhat it suggests
Slow burn, smells like burnt hair or feathers, leaves a fine ash that crumbles to powderHuman hair (or another animal protein fibre)
Melts and shrinks away from the flame, smells of plastic, leaves a hard, sticky beadSynthetic fibre, or human hair blended with synthetic
Burns like hair at first, then leaves a shiny residuePossibly a heavy silicone coating; repeat after washing

Because both Remy and non-Remy hair are human hair, both pass a burn test in the same way. Use it to rule out synthetic blends, then rely on the cuticle, tangle and wash checks for Remy.

Signs you can spot before you buy

You cannot touch hair through a screen, but a few things in a listing tell you a lot.

Price that is too low

Collecting hair in its natural order, sorting it by length and keeping it aligned through washing and wefting takes time and labour. A bundle offered at a fraction of the usual market price has usually skipped some of that work.

Vague origin

A seller who knows their hair can tell you where it comes from and where it is processed. Suvita hair, for example, is temple hair from South India, processed in our own facility in Delhi. If a seller cannot answer the question, treat that as information.

Ends that look identical

Real human hair bundles taper slightly towards the ends, because not every strand is the same length. Bundles that look perfectly blunt and thick from weft to tip in every photo may have been heavily trimmed or mixed with fibre.

Claims you cannot check

Be cautious with sellers who promise hair that never tangles under any treatment, or that lasts forever. All human hair needs care. With proper care, our own hair lasts 3–5 years, and that range depends on how it is washed, dried, heated and stored.

If your hair fails these checks

Do the checks within the first few days, before installing, colouring or cutting. Take photos or a short video of what you see, in daylight, including the weft and the label. Most sellers handle quality concerns only on unaltered hair, and evidence makes any conversation quicker. With Suvita, manufacturing defects are replaced if reported within 7 days of delivery with photos; see returns and replacements for the details.

If you are buying for the first time from a new supplier, ordering a single bundle and running these checks before placing a larger order costs little and tells you more than any product description. Since there is no minimum order at Suvita, you can do exactly that.
